Experience in the Workplace During the many years of working in the IT (Information Technologies) field, I have dealt with hundreds of people from all over the world, from as far as Asia, to as close as Detroit, and although all the people I have dealt with can speak English to a certain degree, most have what Amy Tan, writer of â€Å"Mother Tongue† would call â€Å"Broken English†. By this meaning, the words they use are the primary words of a sentence that just barely make the sentence itself understandable. To make matters worse, most of those people I deal with are overseas, so the only way of voice communication is the telephone. Even when speaking with friends just across town that have been brought up the same as I, and speak the same â€Å"tongue† as I, there is problems understanding one another because of the phone devices themselves – sometimes having static in the line, the call just breaking up, and even sometimes calls being dropped in the middle of a thought. Now, you put into account all of these factors, then make a business call to someone overseas who speaks with â€Å"Broken English†, and there is defiantly going to be a bit of frustration, trying to understand one another†¦ This applies to people on both ends of the call! Now, when it comes to matters like this and dealing with business, I must agree with Thomas Bray, writer of â€Å"Memorial Day and Multiculturalism†, when he states â€Å"Bilingual education is a bad idea.† I refer to this meaning, if everyone was taught and brought up speaking one language, then doing business matters overseas over the phone would be much easier, because it would be easier to understand one another, in my opinion. There have even been some instances where after dealing with someone on the phone overseas for quite awhile and not being able to get much accomplished, I’ll ask if there is any chance that I can to speak to someone with better English, kind of like the instance where Amani Ammari, a classmate of mine, had to speak for her mother because her mother only had â€Å"Limited English† as Amani stated in one of our discussions online. To now turn this into a complete opposite direction, I agree with Maxine Hairston, writer of "Diversity, Ideology, and Teaching Writing" and all of her ideas on have classrooms being multicultural.

Basketball and Soccer

Basketball and Soccer Do you know what the differences are between soccer and basketball? These are the two most popular sports around the world. Soccer was invented over 2000 years ago in China. On the other hand, basketball is one of my favorite sports. Originally, this game was played in American schools in 1891. There are some differences between basketball and soccer such as, the part of the body that you play with, the number of players and the form of shooting.Though soccer and basketball have large differences, they are both the most popular sports in the world. Finally, the form of shooting is another difference that distinguishes these sports. In soccer, goals are scored when the ball passes across the line, between the goal posts into the net.The ball is moved by kicking the ball with your feet and is shot into the goal. On the other hand, in basketball the players pass the ball with their hands and move the ball by bouncing it on the court. The goals in each sport are worth a different amount points. For example in soccer each goal is woth one point and in basketball each basket is worth one, two or three points. In conclusion, soccer and basketball are someof the most popular sports, even though they are different.

I Am A Strange Loop, By Douglas R. Hofstadter Essay

The question of the self is one that appears throughout history and has been debated in myriad ways. Many people assert their claim as the correct one, though some are content to contemplate the self for the rest of their lives rather than remain at one conclusion. Humans are their own enigma, unable to understand the complexity of themselves. It is important to have some theory of consciousness in order to understand the actions of ourselves and others, therefore it is irresponsible to consider the matter a moot point. After consideration of works describing the physical processes of the brain, it seems that there is nothing more simple or wonderful than consciousness existing within the physical brain. Moreover, the concept of self is a construct of the mind rather than something that truly exists. In Douglas R. Hofstadter’s book, I Am a Strange Loop, the idea of the self as phenomena arising from the physically existing brain is explored. As Hofstadter describes the self, â€Å"†¦for each of us, the strange loop of our unique ‘I’-ness resides inside our own brain. There is one such loop lurking inside the cranium of each normal human being.† (180) Throughout the book, Hofstadter explains that the elusiveness of the self lies in the way people conceptualize abstract ideas and how humans characterize themselves.
